Elisabeth Lasch-Quinn on the Institute

Institute Academic Advisory Board member Elisabeth Lasch-Quinn has wonderful things to say about the Institute following her visit last month for the annual meeting of the Advisory Board and the overlapping conference “The Present Challenges and Believable Futures of Liberal Democracy.” Lasch-Quinn praises the Institute’s award-winning journal, it’s “penetrating” surveys, and it’s Fellows program, as well as what makes the Institute “so distinctive” among its peers in the academy. Theory Dessert this Friday

This Friday, April 26, Paul Cantor (U.Va., English) will discuss his article for the Summer 2013 issue of The Hedgehog Review, ”The Apocalyptic Strain in Popular Culture:
The American Nightmare Becomes the American Dream.” Cantor’s presentation is the year’s final Theory Dessert, hosted by the Institute of the Humanities & Global Culture, and will take place at the Harrison Institute at 1:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public, and will be followed by a reception.

Benjamin Snyder on WTJU’s Soundboard

Institute Dissertation Fellow Benjamin Snyder discussed his article from the Fall 2012 issue of The Hedgehog Review on WTJU’s Soundboard. In “Dignity and the Professionalized Body: Truck Driving in the Age of Instant Gratification,” Snyder explores time pressure, stress, and busyness in the American workplace through the experiences of long-distance truck drivers. Snyder’s article is also featured in the March 2013 Initiatives newsletter. You can listen to his interview here.

Congratulations to The Hedgehog Review

The Institute is delighted to announce that The Hedgehog Review‘s Fall 2011 issue, “The Roots of the Arab Spring,” is the recipient of the Council of Editors of Learned Journal’s 2012 Best Public Intellectual Special Issue award. The judges praised the timeliness and importance of the issue’s focus, the insightfulness of the content, the accessibility of the prose, and the elegance of the aesthetic presentation, as well as noting in particular the thematic introduction written by Institute faculty Joseph E. Davis.

Wendell Berry and Wes Jackson’s “50-Year Farm Bill”

For the past three years, Wendell Berry and his longtime collaborator Wes Jackson of the Land Institute have advocated for a long-term solution to America’s land “emergency.” At a recent James Beard conference in New York City, Berry made a case for their “50-Year Farm Bill,” now published in The Atlantic. Theory Dessert: Sustainability
