Adam Seligman
When we think of religious practice, we do not normally characterize divisions in terms of ritual and sincerity. But, this is precisely the dichotomy that Adam Seligman argues is at the heart of modern religious experience. Seligman spoke on November 18, 2009. An excerpt from his talk was published in The Hedgehog Review 12.1 (Spring 2010).

Jean Bethke Elshtain
The Institute was pleased to host Jean Bethke Elshtain, Laura Spelman Rockefeller Professor of Social and Political Ethics at the University of Chicago Divinity School, on October 2, 2008. Professor Elshtain delivered a lecture (based on her 2006 Gifford Lectures) titled “The Myth of the Sovereign Self.” Eighty people came to Watson Manor to hear the talk.

Jonathan Judaken
On February 28, 2008 Professor Jonathan Judaken of the University of Memphis gave a lecture titled, “Rethinking the ‘New Antisemitism’ in a Global Age.” This lecture was co-sponsored by the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture’s Working Group on Race and Human Flourishing, the Jewish Studies Program, and the Special Lectures Committee.

James Bryant
James Bryant presented a paper on “Human Flourishing in W. E. B. DuBois’ Late Sociological Imagination” to a group from co-sponsors IASC and the Carter G. Woodson Institute, as well as other UVa students and faculty.

Nicholas Wolterstorff
On November 1, 2007, prominent philosopher and Institute Senior Fellow Nicholas Wolterstorff delivered a lecture on “Love and Justice,” in connection with his forthcoming book on the topic. Professor Wolterstorff discussed his theme in the Fall 2007 issue of Culture, which can be downloaded here.

U.S. Poet Laureate Donald Hall
On February 2, 2007, 475 people attended U.S. Poet Laureate
Donald Hall’s poetry reading at the University of
Virginia and responded with a standing ovation. Earlier
in the day, Hall led a seminar on illness and poetry for
a group of physicians, medical students, poets, and IASC
fellows.
The Poet Laureate’s visit was co-hosted by The
Hedgehog Review, The Virginia
Quarterly Review, and the Center
for Biomedical Ethics and Humanities, with generous financial
support from UVa’s Office of the President.

Occasional Lecture
Mohammad Khatami, Former President of Iran
On September 7, 2006, the Institute for Advanced Studies
in Culture sponsored a lecture by former Iranian President
Mohammad Khatami. Khatami delivered a lecture on “Religion
and Politics,” identifying peace through security
as the fundamental international dilemma of our time.
