Greg Thompson received his Ph.D. in the Theology, Ethics, and Culture program in the University of Virginia’s Department of Religious Studies. His dissertation, "An Experiment in Love: Martin Luther King and the Re-imagining of American Democracy," explores King's public theology of love. His research interests include Theology, Social Theory, African-American intellectual history, and the American Civil Rights Movement. In general, Thompson considers the role of theological communities in the service of the common good and is a lead scholar on the Institute's Vocations and Common Good project.

The Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture is an interdisciplinary research center and intellectual community at the University of Virginia committed to understanding contemporary cultural change and its individual and social consequences, training young scholars, and providing intellectual leadership in service to the public good.
